The second generation Toyota Prius first introduced in 2004 and is now a mid-size vehicle instead of the original 2001 compact models. Its strongest selling point can not be anything other than the insane gas mileage rates at 60-mpg in the city and 51-mpg on the highway. What’s more? It is one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles in the market with its extremely low emissions which produces almost zero pollution. Making this funky looking vehicle the best selling hybrid in the United States and the world. So much so that in 2004 there was a six months waiting list for the Prius prompting Toyota to increase the production by 50 percent.
The Prius only comes with one powertrain, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive which composed of a gasoline engine and a permanent magnet electric motor. The engine is a 1.5 liter four-cylinder that produces 76-horsepower and 82 lb-ft torque while the motor produces a maximum of 67-horsepower and 295 lb-ft torque. The system can operate as an electric motor only, a gasoline engine only or as both depending on the traffic. It may take a while for drivers to get used to having the engine starting and stopping routinely, it is not harmful as the engine was designed for it so the fuel is only used when truly needed resulting in the vehicle’s excellent gas mileage.
The interior has also been upgraded for a classier look using soft, stylish fabric looking very much like leather but much more comfortable. A large LCD touch-screen is set in the middle of the dashboard allowing easy access to the climate control, stereo and navigation systems. There is no gearshift level, just a small joystick mouthed on the dash allowing you to easy gearshift just by tapping your fingers.
The ride is comfortable, smooth and quiet. All in all, Toyota Prius is an excellent choice for those seeking style while being environmentally friendly. Prius is not a cheap car but with its great gas mileage rates and high resale value based on Toyota’s reputation and its own popularity, it is no doubt a top choice hybrid.
