With the gas price hitting the record highs, consumers are struggling with ways to reap their gas money and getting more mileage out of their gas tank. But luckily that recent advancement of automotive technology has seen an improvement of the fuel economy of our car engines. The availability of great gas saving products in the market is also a big help for drivers. And there’re also a few things we can take into our own hands when it comes to cutting our fuel costs.
Keep your air filter free-flowing. Keeping the air filter cleaned allows the air to flow into the engine thus it performs better which means more gas mileage. Most elements of the filter can be washed but you still need to need to change the filter on a regular basis. Hold the filter up to the sun and if you can’t see through it, you need a new one.
Fuel Catalysts. The catalyst speeds up the combustion process and resulted in better fuel efficiency and improved gas mileage. Some catalysts can simply be dropped into your gas tank, others need to be installed along the fuel line, between the tank and the engine.
Keep the tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires can cost 2-3 MPG more. Use a reliable tire gauge and check the tires when they’re cold and inflate the tires if needed. Use the inflation pressures shown in the owner’s manual.
Slow down. Simple logic, increased speed = increased gas price. Try to stay within the speed limit and you’ll save a lot of fuel while your journey won’t take that much longer.
Get rid of the junk. The more weight your car has to carry, the more gas it will need. Go through your car periodically and see what can be thrown away and brought back into the house.
Don’t drive! Or drive less if you must. There’re other forms of transportation, carpool, take the bus, train, ride the bike or walk. Make it a habit to ask yourself, “Is this trip really necessary?”, before taking your car out for a drive.
