DESCRIPTION

The improvements found in the sixth-generation 2006 Nissan Maxima are set to bring the car closer to the “four-door sports car” statement billed to the Maxima entry. A goal is to become a powerful, muscular combination of sports and family sedan. Available in two trims, the SE and SL, both trims are equipped with a standard 3.5 liter V6 engine producing 265-horsepower at 5800rpm and 255 lb-ft torque at 4400rpm achieves 20mpg in the city and 28mpg on the highway. A five-speed automatic transmission comes standard with the option of a six-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

The new Maxima offers two unique features. First, the Skyview Roof above both the front and rear seats and the added outward visibility comes standard in all models, resulting in the interior sensational spaciousness. Second, the optional Elite seating package replaces the three-across rear bend seat with twin fixed and heated bucket seats separated by a console. The new Maxima is also upgraded with illuminated steering wheel switches and an improved Graphic User Interface (GUI) for the navigation system. Satellite radio, Bluetooth hand-free phone system and automatically incline outside windows are the available options. The new Advanced Air Bag system includes dual-stage front airbags, head curtain airbags, seat belts sensors and a front-seat passenger classicification sensor. Three-point safety belts and active front head restraints also add to the improved safety features.

The Nissan Maxima is not quite a sports sedan comparing to, say, the Mazda6 but with an emphasis on overall handling and speed, the Maxima is definitely sportier than any other mainstream mid-size sedan. The ride is pleasant at a sport-touring pace and an excellent highway cruiser. The 18-inch, 45-profile tires give a sports car look and good, sharp turning characteristics but having short, stiff sidewalls also make for a bumpy ride on poorer road condition.

Overall, the Nissan Maxima makes a great choice if you are looking for a valuable family sedan with the sporty touch to it.
