The Toyota Hilux is a compact pickup truck. In North America, the Hilux name was discontinued in 1976 in favor of Truck, Pickup Truck, or Compact Truck, until it was renamed the Tacoma in 1995. The rugged dependability of the Hilux makes it a favorite amongst buyers.
The current Hilux is the sixth generation of Hilux vehicles produced by Toyota. There are several improvements over the fifth generation. Torsional stiffness has been increased by 45% over the 5th generation model. The result is improved body control and fewer vibrations, resulting in reduced cabin noise. The front suspension offers greater bump absorption and improved stability at speed. The actual ride comfort is also enhanced by a longer wheelbase.
The entry-level 2.5-litre D4-D produces 118bhp and an astonishing 325Nm of torque. Acceleration in the Hilux is leisurely at best, and can sometimes struggle on faster roads. However, the engine is quiet for a pick-up truck. The only criticism would be that its ride can be rather uncomfortable over smaller bumps when unladen.
The Hilux has a robust feeling interior. The cabin is spacious, and offers greater headroom and leg space. The Hilux can carry more than 1000kg in its load bay. The dimensions of the cargo area are more than the fifth generation Hilux, and comparable with the new Nissan Navara.
The Hilux comes with a collapsible steering, Antilock Braking System, and retractable brake pedals. Twin airbags are standard across the range. The Hilux is definitely one of the most reliable vehicles on the road.
