The 2006 Toyota Matrix is one of the best compact wagons for hauling people and cargo in its price class. The car offers the interior functionality and flexibility usually associated with larger vehicles.
The 2006 model is essentially unchanged from last year. However, the new SAE testing procedures have resulted in lower horse power ratings. Matrix comes in three models, with 1.8-liter 4-cyl engines. Standard and XR offer front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with 126 and 118 hp, respectively. The XRS comes only with front-wheel drive, 164 hp, and 6-speed manual transmission. The front-wheel-drive Standard and XR offer a 5-speed manual or optional automatic.
Unlike previous Toyota wagon variants, the Matrix has a spacious cabin. Rear occupants will also be very comfortable because of this feature. The tailgate opens upward, and the rear glass can be raised independently. Underneath the floor is a hidden storage compartment. The front-passenger seat also folds forward, allowing large items to be carried with the tailgate. The most basic versions are provided with air conditioning and a CD player. Optional items include a DVD-based navigation system, a power moonroof, and premium sound systems.
The Matrix comes with a variety of safety features. Antilock brakes are standard on the Matrix XRS and all-wheel drive (AWD) models. In crash testing, the matrix earned five stars for driver protection, and four stars for front passenger protection.
The Matrix is priced at $15,260. It boasts of superior ride quality and good handling. It is definitely an affordable option for most car buyers.
