The X-Trail is a mid-size SUV. It fares better in most areas than most of its rivals. It poses a serious threat to the domination of Land Rover's Freelander in the soft-roader category. The X-Trail comes with a good range of engines and trim levels.
This car is available in SE, Sport, SVE and T-Spec trim with a choice of two petrol engines; a 2.0 liter and 2.5 liter, and a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine. Three transmissions are available a 5-speed manual, a 4-speed automatic and 6-speed manual. The diesel engine is not available with an automatic gearbox, only with a six speed manual gearbox.
Performance wise, the 2.5-litre four-cylinder (163bhp) is the best choice. The 134bhp turbodiesel is the top-selling version. It returns an economy of 39mpg, and has a good spread of power and good response above 2,000rpm.
The X-Trail is well-equipped. Base S models have an electric sunroof, metallic dashboard inserts, power-assisted steering, and electric windows. Sport models add 16in alloys, a roof spoiler, and a single CD player. SVE comes with leather seats and a six-CD autochanger. T-Spec is the top specification, with DVD BirdView satellite navigation.
The vehicle offers a great driving position with good all-round visibility. Big, chunky dials are centrally-mounted, which makes them easy to see. The seats are excellent, and there is a lot of head and legroom for all passengers. It takes five passengers easily.
Overall, the X-Trail is easy to drive and stable on the road, with a decent amount of grip and good handling.
