The Patrol is a vehicle that should be purchased only if you frequently go off the road. It is commonly used by farmers, vets, and UN peacekeepers. This long-running series of big, muscular, three and five-door 4x4 vehicles has evolved gradually over the years.
The latest generation of this vehicle is more comfortable, features a ride stabilization system, a more powerful intercooled diesel engine, and more modern looks. However, it's not fast, and it doesn't handle on the road.
The five-door Patrol has plenty of room and, because of its length, it offers a huge amount of legroom in the back. Seats are good enough for long trips. The all round view is excellent, and the steering on all models is relatively good. New generation Patrol GR has a larger, more curved body, with improved interior space and switchable suspension system. Good access to the luggage compartment and a split-folding seat means you can carry some huge loads. There is plenty of space to put large boxes on the seats.
The Patrol comes with an old fashioned 2.8TD engine. This provides loads of power for towing and serious off-roading, and reasonable fuel economy. 3.0Di has better power, but still has poor acceleration. Even the 4.2 petrol engine models are not very quick.\
The Patrol may not be the most elegant vehicle around, but it offers good value as a tough workhorse. At times, its enormous width makes it a nightmare to guide down narrow country lanes or urban streets. This car is a true off-roader.
