The current Mitsubishi Lancer range lacks power, it is only when you look at the special Ralliart Edition that adequate power is derived from the power plant for a fun-to-drive economic sedan.
The first US Lancer models launched in early 2002 (the Lancer has been sold successfully in other parts of the world since the early 1980s) had more upscale styling and interior space in the rear when compared to its economic-sedan segment competitors. The engine offered was a mere 120-horspower 4-cylinder unit that pulled it about.
The so-called O-Z Rally, sports, version of that series Lancer only boasted the standard engine and no ABS brakes. While the Ralliart version sedan boats a bit more power from the 162-horspower 4-cylinder. In 2004 Mitsubishi released a Sportsback compact station wagon to attract younger consumers but soon discontinued it.
Similarly powered units power the current sedans, a 120-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder for the standard trim levels, and a 2.4-liter engine tuned to produce 162 hp for the high-performance Ralliart. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, with an optional four-speed automatic also available.
Despite the well-appointed quality interiors, large interior space and smooth ride quality the standard lacks useful power and really make it a struggle to compete. Sedans come with 15-inch wheels, air conditioning; power windows, locks, and mirrors; a tilt steering wheel; a height-adjustable driver seat; and a CD player. The O-Z Rally comes with alloy wheels, white-faced gauges, cruise control, split-folding rear seat, keyless entry, unique interior trim and embroidered floor mats. The Ralliart furthers this with fog lamps, lowered body kit moldings, 16-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and sport seats.
Safety equipment such as ABS and side airbags are standard on the Ralliart and only optional on the two bas units. For buyers looking at the base lancers, invest a bit more in the side airbags as the Lancer performs extremely poor in side-impact tests.
