The Ford Freestyle is a successful example of a crossover vehicle. It can be classified as somewhere between a station wagon and a sport utility vehicle. It is a mid-sized car capable of seating up to seven passengers in three rows of seats.
The Freestyle is offered in three trim levels: SE, SEL, and Limited. Each level is available with all-wheel drive. All have the same 3.0-liter V6 engine, rated at 203 horsepower. All are equipped with a continuously variable transmission, or CVT. The SE starts at $25,105.
From a design point of view, the Freestyle resembles a sport utility; the upright front end, the tall side glass, the fender blisters, the rear liftgate, and the big rear bumper cover add to the look. The design is quite similar to the Ford Five Hundred.
The Ford Freestyle offers lots of cargo space. It offers great versatility with split-folding third-row seats and a fold-flat front passenger seatback. The latter allows hauling objects up to 10 feet long, like a surf board or a ladder, while hauling passengers on the left side. There are as many as a dozen cup holders. Ford also provides magazine pouches on the back side of the front seatbacks, the usual center console and a modest glove box.
The Freestyle’s Ride and handling are good. The steering has a good on-center feel. The cabin is a quiet and pleasant, with respectable comfort for all passengers. Overall, the Freestyle rides smoother and handles better than an SUV, and gives better fuel economy.
