The Ford Cargo was originally launched as a lightweight pickup truck. Over the years, the Cargo has undergone many design changes. The most recent version of the Cargo is the Econoline Cargo van. The Cargo van has a massive cargo-hauling ability, wide range of configurations, and a powerful diesel engine option.
The lineup of vans is fairly vast: There are the base-models E-150 and the E-250. The E-250 Extended, the tougher E-350 Super Duty and the E-350 Super Duty Extended are the higher end models. The base models are equipped with the 4.6-liter, V8 engine which produces 225 horsepower and 286 pound-feet of torque. The 5.4-liter V8 makes 255 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. E-350 Super Duty and Super Duty Extended models have the 5.4-liter V8 as standard.
In base form, the vans are equipped with two vinyl bucket seats, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel adjustment, a two-speaker stereo and 16-inch tires. For those whose hauling needs aren't too intensive, the base E-150 model is sufficient. If you need to haul larger loads, select the E-250. For contractors with payloads of up to 4,000 pounds, there is the E-350.
As far as driving impressions are concerned, the Cargo vans are relatively stable at highway speeds. For safety, you get four-wheel antilock brakes, second-generation front airbags and seatbelt pretensioners for the driver and passenger. Stability control is now standard on the extended-length E-350.
In spite of their old design, the Cargo vans are quite efficient. However, if you want a higher output vehicle, consider buying a Chevrolet Express or a GMC Savana.
