The Mazda 5 is a low priced compact minivan (space wagon) that offers pack-leading power, outstanding fuel economy and useful space.
Based on the platform of the compact Mazda 3 hatch, the Mazda 5 is bigger but remains small when compared to other minivans available on the market. In the face of this the Mazda 5 can seat six passengers with ease and offers a full array of options that some of the others in the class do not.
Entry to the rear is gained by twin sliding doors, which are easily opened with a single finger. The rear space is laid out with recline second-row seats that fold flat and third row seating that, when lowered, provides a total load floor of almost five feet. Passive safety devices include standard front side airbags and full-length head side curtain airbags; as well as four wheel ABS disc brakes with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution).
The Mazda 5 features sporty looks and comfortable ride. Minimal body roll is experienced in the Mazda 5 as it shares the same suspension as the Mazda 3 sibling, but due to its increased height the Mazda 5 feels a bit top heavy. Steering is sharp and 3-point turns are extremely easy.
Transmissions are available in standard five-speed manual form, or four-speed automatic. Minivan buyers don’t normally look for performance, but despite its adequate acceleration around town, the Mazda 5’s responsive 153-horsepower 2.3-liter engine struggles to pull its 600-pound mass ahead when overtaking on the highways.
