Avoid Traffic Accidents :

More than 6 million traffic accidents happen each year in the United States.  And, if you're like most of us, chances are you want to avoid a crash if at all possible!  Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep yourself safe on the streets.

BUY A SAFER CAR: Research has found that, of all colors of cars, silver is the one least likely to be in a traffic accident.  Experts speculate that it may be because silver is more visible and reflective.  Don't like silver?  Stick with light colors like white or yellow instead of darker blues or black.

OBEY THE LAW:  Speed is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents.  Keep your driving speed at or below the legal speed limit, which is designed with your safety in mind.  Slower driving will give you more time for braking and greater time to react if you need to avoid a collision.

TAKE A CLASS:  Many driving schools offer a defensive driving course.  Usually lasting just a few hours, it teaches you how to handle your vehicle and assess traffic to be as safe as possible.  Another perk:  many auto insurance companies will offer you a discount on insurance after you complete a defensive driving class.

STAY ALERT:  Keep your eyes on the road and stay alert at all times.  Be on guard for objects that might be in your path, such as a running deer or trash that blows out of a pickup truck.  Watch other drivers, too.  If you see one driving erratically or too fast, move out of their path.

DRIVE SMART: Is it raining or snowing outside?  It's probably smart to lower your speed.  Is the sun blinding your eyes?  Put on some sunglasses or lower your visor.  Is it foggy outside?  Use your low beams instead of your high beams.  It may seem basic, but simple, smart driving can help keep you safe on the road.
